Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month
President Barak Obama recently declared September as National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month. The proclamation reads:
“This year, more than 14,000 women will lose their lives to ovarian cancer — the most deadly of all female reproductive system cancers — and more than 21,000 of our mothers, daughters, wives, and sisters will be diagnosed with this terrible disease. Every day across our country, families, friends, and communities come together to support and empower those who are fighting for their lives, offering encouragement and bringing hope for a cancer-free future. During National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, our Nation pauses to lift up all those who know the pain of this disease, honor those we have lost, and renew our commitment to fighting ovarian cancer through more effective prevention, detection, and treatment.”
A natural answer to ovarian cancer: scientific studies initiated by The Beljanski Foundation!
My father, Mirko Beljanski, PhD, biochemist and biologist, spent his career studying the causes and mechanisms occurring during gene activation, cell division and tissue development in both normal and malignant states. He showed that the DNA of a cancer cell becomes destabilized when in the presence of carcinogens (mutagens or other), pollutants, or other harmful molecules. He then invented the Oncotest, which allowed him to identify the carcinogenic potential of different molecules often present in our daily surrounding, leading him to also discover the anti-carcinogenic potential of two plant extracts: Pao pereira and Rauwolfia vomitoria.
Over the course of many years, Mirko Beljanski studied the toxicological and pharmacological properties of both plants, and analyzed their mechanism of action in vitro and in vivo on different cancer cells. Pao pereira and Rauwolfia vomitoria not only appeared to destroy a large variety of different cancer cells lines, but also were not toxic towards healthy cells. In one study, Mirko Beljanski’s Pao pereira extract, then called PB-100, was successfully tested on 16 different cancer cells lines, including two ovarian cancer cell lines.(1)
Since then, the benefits of Pao pereira and Rauwolfia vomitoria have been confirmed and expanded through recent research supported by The Beljanski Foundation. Dr. Qi Chen and Dr. Jeanne Drisko at Kansas University Medical Center (KUMC), interested in ovarian cancer, have explored the potential of the Pao pereira and Rauwolfia vomitoria extracts as an alternative or complementary therapeutic treatment to chemotherapy.
In their first publication on this subject titled Antitumor Activities of Rauwolfia Vomitoria Extract and Potentiation of Carboplatin Effects Against Ovarian Cancer, the KUMC team found that Rauwolfia vomitoria was effective against ovarian cancer cells both alone and in combination with the chemo drug, Carboplatin. The combination decreased tumor size in animal experiments by 87 to 90%.
These dramatic results indicate that in the presence of Rauwolfia vomitoria, drug resistance of the tumor cells is overcome and the activity of carboplatin is restored. The authors conclude that, “Rauwolfia vomitoria has potent anti-tumor activity and in combination significantly enhances the effect of Carboplatin against ovarian cancer. ”
In a second publication, The plant extract of Pao pereira potentiates carboplatin effects against ovarian cancer, Dr. Drisko and Dr. Chen show that Pao pereira plant extract could be extremely helpful against ovarian cancer. The study concludes that “In vivo, Pao pereira alone suppressed tumor growth by 79% and decreased volume of ascites by 55%. When Pao pereira was combined with Carboplatin, tumor inhibition reached 97% and ascites was completely eradicated. Pao pereira possess potent antitumor activity and could enhance Carboplatin effect, and therefore holds therapeutic potential in the treatment of ovarian cancer.”
To continue the research on ovarian cancer, The Beljanski Foundation needs your support!
The University of California San Francisco is currently conducting new studies sponsored by The Beljanski Foundation, to determine the potential of the Pao pereira and Rauwolfia vomitoria extracts on ovarian cancer stem cells. The preliminary data are very promising.
To be able to continue this research, The Beljanski Foundation needs your support. Don’t wait until the end of the year to make a difference; the thousands of women diagnosed each year with ovarian cancer in the United States can’t afford to wait that long: donate today!
