Omega 3 to the rescue!
Omega 3 fatty acids, which are found naturally in oily fish, are widely hailed for their anti-inflammatory properties which are thought to protect against a raft of maladies including heart attacks and strokes, arthritis and various cancers.
A recent study of children with poor reading skills found that many were deficient in omega-3, and those with the lowest levels had the most difficulty concentrating and learning. The scientists measured levels of omega-3 in blood samples from 493 schoolchildren aged seven to nine, and asked their parents to report on their usual diet. Almost nine out of ten children ate fish less than two portions per week – the amount recommended by official health guidelines – and nearly one in ten never ate fish. The study, published in the PLOS One journal, found that levels of omega-3 DHA, the predominant form of omega 3 in the brain, predicted children’s ability to learn and pay attention.
At the same time, using the SELECT study, a team of researchers looked into the data of 834 men diagnosed with prostate cancer, of which 156 had high-grade cancer and found that men with high levels of omega 3 in their blood were at 43 per cent greater risk of prostate cancer than those with low concentrations. The difference in blood concentrations of the fatty acids between the two groups was the equivalent of more than two portions of salmon per week, researchers said.
The conclusion for the latter study was slammed by the industry, as it did not provide any information about the source of the Omega 3 intake. This stresses the benefits of purified quality fish oil, over fish itself, which unfortunately comes now days with its load of heavy metals and antibiotics. I have long been convinced that quality purified fish oil is now healthier than fish itself, and that people who eat fish more than 3 times a week should definitively consider taking a supplement that help promote the removal of heavy metals. That’s why Targetage is offering both.
