Could probiotics ease diabetes?
Our organism is full of bacteria, some good and some bad. Probiotics ,naturally found in the body, are called “good” bacteria because they help keep your gut healthy.
Studies show that probiotics help reduce the risk of respiratory tract infections like coughs and colds and can help to relieve some of the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome. Other emerging research1 suggests that altering the balance of bacteria in the gut can help reduce the risk of metabolic syndrome which is linked to increased risk of Type 2 diabetes and heart disease, and that your gut bacteria may also have an impact on your metabolic rate and weight. But the good side effects of probiotics only seen with poor diets: Researchers in Australia found an extra dose of ‘good bacteria’ – like Lactobacillus found in yogurt – had a transformative effect on rats with poor diets. It improved metabolism and even boosted cognitive brain function in rats eating a typical Western-style diet of saturated fats and processed meats. However, rats with a normal or healthy diet saw barely any impact – and some even experienced bad side effects.2
