Do not underestimate the benefits of vitamin D!
To recharge its reserves of vitamin D, the body needs to be exposed to the sun for ten to fifteen minutes on a daily basis everyday, essential to strengthen our immune system. It is doable during summertime, but the task becomes complicated by the arrival of winter.
Like it or not, winter is here and with it the desire to spend long days in front of the fireplace. But what happens to our intake of Vitamin D if we no longer go outside? Without exposure to sunlight our vitamin D levels may become too low, so choose a vitamin D supplement, preferably a natural vitamin as opposed to a synthetic, and a vitamin D3, which is more bioavailable than vitamin D2.
It is not a secret, the beneficial effects of vitamin D are numerous. As stated in a recent article in the Daily Mail: « According to the Harvard School of Public Health in the United States, ‘being “D-ficient’’ may increase the risk of a host of chronic diseases – including osteoporosis, heart disease, some cancers and multiple sclerosis – and infectious diseases, such as tuberculosis and even seasonal flu’(…) »
I wish to aknowledge the initiative of Prof. Kefah Mokbel, specialist in breast cancer surgery, written in the Daily Mail: «All women over the age of 20 should take a daily dose of Vitamin D to reduce their chances of developing breast cancer, an expert claims. Professor Kefah Mokbel is writing to Health Secretary Jeremy Hunt to argue that making the‘sunshine vitamin’ free on the NHS would save 1,000 lives a year. He has already started handing out the pills to female patients at his private clinic. But he believes all women should get them – even those who have not been diagnosed with the disease. »
